The Excelsior Fire District provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, fire prevention, community awareness, hazardous materials mitigation and disaster response utilizing a combination fire service. We are staffed with 40 members, including three full-time positions: Fire Chief, Fire Marshal and Administrative Specialist. We are a joint powers unit of government supported by the cities of Deephaven, Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood, and Tonka Bay.
Our major resources include 2 Fire Stations, a 107ft Ladder truck, 2 Engines/Pumpers, 1 Pumper/Tanker, 1 Heavy Rescue vehicle, 1 light rescue vehicle, 2 ATV, 1 grass rig/light rescue vehicle, a Life Safety/Hazmat Trailer, 3 rescue/fire suppression boats, and a number of command/staff vehicles. Other key resources include thermal imaging devices, 5-inch diameter supply hose, Class A foam, Integrated PASS/SCBA, Opti-com signal controls at all semaphores, air monitors, CPR devices and automatic defibrillators.
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) dispatches us on 154.385 VHF. We work closely with the South Lake Minnetonka and Deephaven Police Departments and Hennepin County and Ridgeview Ambulance Services on most emergency calls. The HCSO uses priority medical dispatch protocols to determine the resources required for emergency medical calls. When the Excelsior Fire District is requested to respond to an emergency call, our average response time is approximately 6 minutes.
The Excelsior Fire District averages around 800 calls per year. We work closely with our Mutual Aid fire departments from Chanhassen, Mound, Minnetonka, Long Lake, Victoria, and Wayzata. We also work with the State Hazmat Chemical Response Team (CRT) in Hopkins, 55th Civil Support Group, Hennepin County Emergency Management, Minnetonka Schools, DNR, the Red Cross, and the Salvation Army.
All of our staff is Firefighter II and EMR/EMT certified. All staff members are Operational HAZMAT certified.
